Propeller
Social Bookmarking with Propeller

By Wendy Boswell, About.com

Propeller, formerly known as Netscape, has done some rearranging: they've gone from a portal site to a community site, where users can submit, vote, and comment on stories.

How does Propeller work?

The way Propeller works is very similar to other social bookmarking sites such as Digg or del.icio.us. Users find stories, submit them, and other Propeller users can vote and comment on those stories, with the most popular stories rising to the top.

What's different about Propeller?

Propeller has something called Anchors: from the site FAQ:

"We have a team of eight full-time "Propeller Anchors" in our newsroom that monitor the site 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. These anchors do a number of things to keep the Propeller experience clean and compelling. First, they remove spam (we all hate spam). Second, they select the stories in "Propeller Anchors recommend..." box at the top of the page. Finally, they do followup journalism on many of the stories you vote to the top 10."

So, basically, what this means is there is some moderating going on at Propeller in order to keep stories flowing smoothly.

How do I submit stories to Propeller?

If you just want to read submitted stories at Propeller, you don't have to register. But if you'd like to become part of the Propeller community, all you need to do is visit the sign-up page. It's fast and free, and then you can start scouring the Web for good stuff you'd like to share.

What are the benefits of submitting stories to Propeller?

There are two different ways you can look at the possible benefits of submitting stories to Propeller. First, your submissions can benefit the Web community at large - maybe there's something that you've found that no one else has seen. Secondly, if you own a site or blog, you can submit your own stories to Propeller and possibly invite more traffic to your spot on the Web. Either way, it's a win-win.
